If done right, Yandere (A Person, often psychopath with unhealthy romantic obsession) can turn the anime into an emotional tornado. By its definition, Yandere is not a positive thing however, when watching Mirai Nikki by Asread Studio, perceptions such as positive and negative, good or bad become irrelevant. There’s a lot of cruelty and sadness in these series but at the same time, it raises positive emotions too. The one who makes this anime dark and bright at same time is Gasai Yuno, N2 protagonist in the series, Yandere “gone too far” female character. Huge shout out of thanks to Esuno Sakae, the author of manga.
Gasai Yuno describes herself as “A half-moon. A bright half and a dark half. Just like me.” For the most part Yuno is a sweet, loving girl; at the same time, she’s just trying to mask her dark side – which is a typical psycho, ruthless killer, manipulative and exceptionally violent; in other words – Yandere… and despite all that, Gasai is a character you can’t help but to love. Or, maybe I’m just a psychopath too which is why her character appeals to me.
While most people may not see it that way, I find Yukiteru Amano far more disturbing than Yuno. Not easy to explain why without giving out spoilers, so best not to go there at all. But think about this for a second, being a lonely high school student and spending days writing diary in a cellphone, while having chat with imaginary friends, one of which happens to be a God of Space and Time… nothing wrong about that, right?
There’s plenty of interesting and unique characters in Mirai Niki and I have a feeling after reading this review you’re going to get to know them anyway but before you do, in fairness to you guys, I’d like to add few more things, in fact, we’ve talked about the positive aspects of the anime, now let’s list the sucky ones:
- Generally speaking, story isn’t that great
- So many plot holes, you could sink a cruise lainer with it.
- Too many filler episodes where simply nothing happens.
Despite all that, Mirai Niki is still a great tragedy anime that will most likely run you over with a monster truck of emotions. Some nasty stuff and cruelty mixed with extreme kawaii-ness, and unpredictable characters, you are going to watch the $!^@ out of these series.
