Let me make this easy for you… The Promised Neverland is the kind of anime you watch like there’s no tomorrow, but at the same time, it has no rewatch value at all. Could well be the N1 anime of the Winter 2019 season (my personal list). So, let’s talk about Yakusoku no Neverland, what’s it about, what you should and shouldn’t expect from it.
Yakusoku no Neverland
The Story of Emma, Norman, Ray, Isabella, Phill, Conny, Don and Gilda.
There isn’t much to talk about the series without giving out spoilers. So, forgive me if I’m being too careful. First of all, I have to protest the big websites such as my anime list for misrepresenting the genre. Essentially, Yakusoku no Neverland is a Drama/Tragedy, Thriller but in no way “psychological”, “Shounen”. that’s just absurd. However, don’t let the word “Tragedy” mislead you. You’re not going to have much time mourning and crying. Things get very intense, very fast, even in the filler parts.
“Tragedy” because it’s a story about children, and everything bad that happens to children is a TRAGEDY by itself … As for the drama part, there’s plenty in The Promised Neverland. But not the cliché, annoying kind of drama. The anime is based on Manga, so most of you interested, probably already know the story behind it. But for the sake for those who don’t know anything about it, let me just tell you, this anime is an absolute MUST SEE despite your genre preferences.
The Promised Neverland
Orphanage Children… Nuff Said.
Here is what you should and shouldn’t expect from the series. This is not an action, fighting, superpowers kind of anime so don’t expect spectacular scenes and spec effects. Also, don’t assume the characters you like and popular characters will necessarily survive and live through this story. There will be deaths. Even if this isn’t ok with you, you should still watch the anime anyway. But it won’t be easy for me to explain why.
On the bright side, you can be 100% sure, despite the slow-paced story progression, you won’t be bored for 1 second. 1 specific thing about the series that I liked is how characters manage to find the way out of absolutely hopeless situations without miracles. The story is well written and logical.
The Promised Neverland is definitely a must-see anime of 2019 Winter Season. It doesn’t matter which specific genre are you into, because it covers nearly all of them, except perhaps the comedy. Watching these series is like reading a good book. Highly recommended for everyone.
